MAKING A DIFFERENCE

MAKING A DIFFERENCE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

What We Do

The Northeast Support Centre & Helpline (NESCH) is an organization that focuses on various advocacy and support programs aimed at addressing discrimination, denial of social rights, gender-based violence, human trafficking, and legal awareness for the Northeastern community in Delhi and other metro cities of India.

NESCH plays a crucial role in providing support, raising awareness, and empowering the Northeastern community in Delhi to address various social and legal challenges they may encounter.

Advocacy

  •  Discrimination: NESCH addresses cases of discrimination faced by individuals from the Northeastern region.

  • Denial of Social Rights: NESCH assists in cases related to the denial of housing rights and other social rights in the workplace and living environments.

  • Sexual Harassment and Assault: NESCH provides support for victims of sexual harassment and assault, both in public spaces and the workplace. We offer assistance 24/7 through a helpline.

Under this initiative, NESCH takes the following steps:

  • Assessment: A team of volunteers assesses the victim's situation, records circumstances, and identifies perpetrators.

  • Relief: Traumatized victims receive relief through counseling, or consoling and rehabilitation.

  • Lodging FIR: NESCH assists victims in lodging First Information Reports (FIRs) with the police.

  • Legal Support: NESCH provides and facilitates legal support to victims.

Legal Awareness Program

NESCH in collaboration with NELN conducts legal awareness programs for the Northeastern community in Delhi. The key focus areas include:

  • Trafficking of girls, women, and children, including rescue, rehabilitation, and prosecution of traffickers.

  • Sexual harassment in the workplace, including how to file complaints and participate in Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) proceedings.

  • Role of Northeastern representatives and community leaders in addressing violence against women and ensuring proper registration of FIRs and medical records.

  • Training survivors and witnesses to give testimonies in courts and handle prosecution and cross-examination.

  • Landlord and tenant issues, such as securing proper documents while renting accommodation.

  • Labor issues, including non-payment of salaries, illegal termination, appointment letters, and non-compliance with labor laws.

  • Domestic violence and legal remedies under the relevant Act.

  • POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) laws, both substantive and procedural.

Sensitization

NESCH conducts sensitization programmes and delivers lectures on the problems faced by people from North East States residing in Delhi and metro cities of India to Delhi Police, students, scholars, professionals, Universities and Colleges, Private and Government institutions.

Gender Empowerment, Women and Child Protection, and Human Trafficking:

NESCH's mandate includes addressing gender-based violence and vulnerabilities.

We intervene in cases of human trafficking, particularly involving young women and children from the Northeast who are trafficked to other states in India and across South Asian and Middle Eastern countries for commercial sexual exploitation.

Awareness and Counselling

  • NESCH organizes awareness campaigns to educate youth about the opportunities available through skill development and entrepreneurship.

  • Career counseling sessions and orientations are conducted to help individuals make informed decisions about their future and understand the benefits of building a career.

Empowering Northeast Indian Youth in Metro Cities through Entrepreneurship and Skill Development

Lack of professional opportunities, inadequate skill development institutions and limited employment opportunities are some of the main reasons for the migration of youth from the northeast states to metro cities of India.  The absence of diverse industries and sectors often compels them to seek employment in metro cities where a wider range of career options are available.

Recognizing this challenge, NESCH's integrated program approach aims to address the root causes of youth migration from the Northeast to metro cities in India by providing skill development opportunities, promoting entrepreneurship, fostering industry partnerships, and raising awareness. NESCH envisions a future where Northeast Indian youth can find meaningful employment and contribute to the development of their homestates while staying connected with their roots.

NESCH's Integrated Program Approach:

  • Establish skill development centers in collaboration with industry partners and government agencies within metro cities. These centers will offer short-term courses in high-demand skills such as information technology, hospitality, healthcare, and retail management.

  • Medium-term skill development programs, including vocational training and apprenticeships, will be designed to equip youth with specialized skills relevant to the job market.

  • Conduct entrepreneurship development programs to nurture entrepreneurial skills among Northeast Indian youths. These programs will provide guidance on business planning, access to funding, and mentorship.

  • Incubation centers will be established to support aspiring entrepreneurs in developing and scaling their business ventures. These centers will provide access to resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

  • Collaborate with leading companies and industries operating in metro cities to facilitate job placements, internships, and on-the-job training for Northeast Indian youths.

  • Work closely with government agencies to create incentives for businesses to invest in the Northeast, thereby increasing employment opportunities in the region.
